Joshua Schulte, a former Central Intelligence Agency employee who leaked a lot of classified information to WikiLeaks, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The Cache of information published by WikiLeaks, dubbed Vault 7, went online in more than one batch throughout 2017. It lays out many of the CIA’s cyber capabilities and methods.

The leak represents the largest knowledge breach in CIA history and among the largest leaks of classified information in U.S. history, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said Thursday in a statement announcing the conviction.

It ” severely undermined the CIA’s capability to gather foreign intelligence against America’s enemies,” jeopardized operations, undermined national security, and cost the agency hundreds of millions of dollars, prosecutors said.

Schulte, 35, was convicted in 2022 of crimes also illegal collection and transmission of national defense information. It was the 2nd trial after jury suspensions and mistrials on the most serious charges of 2020.

He faced another trial for possession of thousands of images and videos of child pornography, which were found on his computer throughout the FBI’s investigation of the leak, and was found guilty of the following charges in September.

Prosecutors allege he was motivated to leak classified information out of resentment over the CIA’s handling of complaints about his work.

He was angry about interpersonal conflicts, being transferred to a different branch, not being given a special level of access in CIA proceedings and similar issues, attorney Damian Williams said in court documents.

“He was determined to destroy the security of our country because he didn’t get what he wanted,” Williams said, adding that Schulte had a comfortable education and family.

Schulte pleaded not guilty, his lawyer said, adding that he had been subjected to “unreasonable conditions” while in prison awaiting trial and sentencing, as well as being confined to his cell 23 hours a day without contact with other inmates, often allowing meals, constant light and cold temperatures, de Castro said.

“We are extremely disappointed that Mr. Schulte received a 40-year prison sentence, but relieved that he did not receive a life sentence as strongly urged by the government,” de Castro said Thursday in an email. He was already expecting a sentence of nine years in prison.

The Vault 7 leak is also among a number of high-profile publications by WikiLeaks, the organisation founded by Julian Assange, who wants to be extradited by the United States from Britain to face prosecution.
